Do You Prefer To Buy Sculpts In Gold or Tokens?

I have a question I'd love people to weigh in on. You see, I own a bakery called The Bon Bon Bakery. And I sell predominantly in tokens, but some sculpts are in gold (mostly because I don't have a huge amount of gold, so I'm quite conservative on what I duplicate with gold, given that you have to spend around 200 gold to duplicate 10 items on average).

So my question is, SmallVersians, do you prefer to buy in gold or tokens on average?

See, I think art is subjective so it depends on how I feel about each individual sculpture; some I could absolutely bare to part with a fair sum of gold for. Others I'd prefer to buy in tokens or lower sums of gold as the sculpture is more a purchase of necessity (i.e. for a mission/space decoration) as opposed to the fact I really like and want to own the sculpture. Overall, though, I think I prefer spending gold on sculptures as I think gold is more useful to the sculptor as a source of income than tokens are.

Haha thank you for your response! Gold is definitely more coveted to artists/sculptors, I agree. I was just torn because, as I don't have a lot of gold to play with, in top of having to spend around 200 gold to generate 10 sculptures, if they don't sell then it's hard to claim back what you've lost. So I was in a quandary!

I agree with Jamie, I mostly buy them for missions and since I genuinely need it I don't look at the price tag.

I think both currencies are useful as you can turn gold into tokens and vice versa, but if you want them to sell quick (I assume), I'd go for tokens. I also think it depends on your buyers, if they really really want/like your sculpture(s) they won't care about the currency. ^^

Thanks for your reply, Cami! I've currently priced the majority of my sculptures in tokens, and have adjusted by pricing some of my larger pieces in gold like ramen, noodle bowls, larger chocolate cakes, etc

Aww haha, thank you so much - I'm so happy you like it! That's so kind of you. And I'm glad regarding the options - I've tried my best to vary it a bit price/currency-wise

Selfishly, my broke self appreciates having the option to pay in tokens because that's the only way I can afford most sculptures at the moment. HOWEVER, I do think that artists deserve the extra compensation in gold, and if I see a sculpt that I really want/need, I have no problem saving up until I can buy it - especially if it's a more intricate design. Most artists are super fair with their prices too, so I really don't mind it. Some shops do have the option for both. The token price tends to be a bit inflated, but again, I don't mind paying a higher price if needed.

Thanks for your reply! Haha, I completely understand that. And I've tried my best, now that I've got items priced in gold as well as tokens, to keep prices as fair and affordable as possible. I've got token items priced from anywhere between 500 tokens to 100 gold, depending on the size of the sculpture. We'll see how it goes!

I like buying sculptures in both but I think it's hard to price them because the gold equivalent is 1:40 or 1:50 so token sculptures are usually 'cheaper' in a sense.

I price my sculptures based on how big they are and how long they took, and mostly in gold because there's less risk of making it 'limited' when there's less buttons to press. I'm always in need of gold but not tokens since I like to mission for my tokens!

You are totally right about it being expensive to copy. I try to release a lot of items at once but when I do this, it can cost me upwards of 30,000gold and sometimes I don't see any of that gold back for weeks! Even though I have 2 shops, if you see me telling people I'm broke, it's because I am!

I prefer to buy sculptures in gold since I have more gold than tokens to be able to shop with. I don’t want to rely on playing tons of missions to support my spending habits if I am trying to decorate a mission space (which is expensive!) I also cringe more on sculptures costing upward of 250 gold unless it’s wow, that’s incredible, 400-500 i.e. for anything I get sticker shock.

Also, as a sculptor myself (though I am really only a mission maker and sculpt to help support that hobby) I tend to price a majority of my sculptures I make in gold, again because I am usually lower on tokens (copying in tokens is expensive for me) and also price my sculpts based on size and the time I spend sculpting/painting them. I use mostly the larger blocks. I hate to admit it, but I am so nit-picky, that I have spent 2-3 weeks to complete one sculpt or a series that fit together to make, so those that I have spent more time on, I charge more for, though I recognize that buyers can be frugal so I am careful with my pricing.

One thing I do find difficult is, what Jess mentioned, is the gold/token ratio. I keep the 1:100 ratio that SW had when pricing items, unlike SV. But since the ratio is not balanced this way, me pricing a token item by SV ratio, would allow someone buying in token to get it cheaper than one paying gold. I simply HATE math to figure on the current token/gold ratio so it’s just easier to sell in gold since I have less tokens anyway. And in a way, I am kind of insulted by buyers that only want sculptures (even one high quality) in tokens based in how much time put into creating them. It makes me sad. So if I DO sell something in token, it’s usually a sculpture that I feel is meh/less popular and wouldn’t sell as well in gold anyway. Unless of course it’s something like a valentine or Christmas tree that I want everyone to be able to have access to as they are more special to have and less of a desire to own. If it is a buyer coming into my shop looking for a specific item that I don’t have or only buy in token, I refer them to other shops (providing their names) to not only help the buyer, but to support other sculptors as well.

Another thing to add is when you go to price a copied sculpture, since most people buy the original in the shop for tokens, when it pops up as gold on a copy, you know you aren't accidentally putting down and pricing your original sculpture!
