I have only just realized the magic of artifacts for the mission I'm currently working on. I'm really enjoying making use of them, but my mission creation experience had me wondering about the difference between artifacts and mission keys? What is the purpose of a mission key as opposed to an artifact?

Artifacts and mission codes work the same way to establish that the player has a special requirement before they do something or something to happen within a mission. The difference is that artifacts are given/removed within the mission space whereas mission keys can only be given/removed within the custom mission making panel (CMP) and are in a way, less convenient to resolve if a player should have an issue.
I’ll make it easier for you though on which to decide to use. Mission keys aren’t currently working/working properly so you will need to use artifacts when assigning requirements for your mission. -
Good to know! They seemed to serve similar functions but I couldn't tell if there was something I was missing. Yeah, def seems more complicated for detangling purposes to not be able to freely give/remove keys outside of the mission panel.
I will continue to wrestle with artifacts.

Question --- is it necessary to remove all artifacts from the player by the end of a mission for if/when they play again? Do artifacts just stay attached in perpetuity??Comment

It is customarily ideal to remove an artifact once it is given (nobody wants to have all that business left on them), yes. However, if you don't, they will automatically expire after 7 days.Comment
